There are times that I'm reminded that I'm truly not in the target audience for most dolls anymore. Disney Descendants is one of those franchises that does that for me. For those who aren't aware, Disney Descendants is a franchise created to supplement the Disney Princess franchise, all about the children of our favorite Disney heroes and villains. The main form this takes is a series of three live-action films and a web-cartoon "Wicked World", but there's also a toy line, which includes dolls, costumes, playsets, and more.
What makes this one of those franchises that remind me that I am so totally not the target audience is that I can see all the flaws in the storytelling and how this was a low attempt to cash in on Mattel's Ever After High and Monster High lines. I hate to sound like a cynical grown-up, but it's true.
However, if there's one thing I can't resist, it's anything Mulan or Aladdin related. And one of the stars of Disney Descendants is Mulan and Shang's daughter Lonnie. I was fortunate enough to score a Lonnie doll used from my favorite Ebayer, Alaskanan. If you're looking for great deals on vintage toys, look her up!
But enough commentary, let's take a look at Lonnie, who I subsequently renamed Lihua, which means "pearl-blossom."
Lihua's hair is a beautiful, thick brown, simply lovely to brush and easy to keep tangle free. She has very light peach eye shadow, soft pink blush, and pink lipstick. The overall effect is of a character who knows how to use makeup to enhance her natural beauty, rather than letting makeup take over her natural beauty.
Love or hate the "Cozy Disney Princess" sketch from "Ralph Breaks the Internet", one can't deny it's here to stay for a while. Since Hasbro now makes all Disney Princess merchandise now, I thought I might try one of the fashion packs made for the new dolls, and see if they fit Disney Descendants dolls.
Spoiler alert: Everything fits. The one major flaw is the fabric on the jacket. It's made of a shiny polyester that was also popular for doll clothes when I was actually playing with them. This stuff doesn't hold up to a lot of abuse, regular, even gentle play will cause it to pull apart eventually.
In my opinion, despite the insanity of the story, the Descendants dolls would make a fine addition to any Disney collector's shelf. And as for the Cozy Squad fashions, well, they are what they are. I'm not sure about some of the design choices, but they are cute and would give existing Hasbro Princess dolls a nice change in clothes. I haven't tried the other items in the collection yet, so I don't know about the other fashion packs, but they are pretty well made. So, choose wisely, and have fun!
